Ukraine
Some interesting posts on the situation in the Ukraine:
Jonathan Edelstein on the Jews of the Ukraine
Extensive coverage at A Fistful of Euros
A metafilter post
And an ever growing wikipedia entry
UPDATE: Live web-cam of the protest in Kiev.
And Timothy Garton Ash has some interesting things to say about the training of the opposition by Serbs:
The student activists […]
Great Firewall
Dan Gillmor has an interesting piece on blogging in China.
Blogging isn’t big business here, at least not yet. At least three blog software providers and Internet hosting operations serve the Chinese-language market, along with several U.S. companies that have created local language versions. Google’s Blogger unit just announced a Chinese version, among several other languages.
Mao, […]
Pseudo Fascism
No time to write much these days, but please take the time to read David Neiwert’s 7 part article on “The Rise of Pseudo Fascism.”
Some announcements:
I’m going to try to keep posting over the next two months, but it will be difficult. I have a lot to do over the next few weeks, and then […]
Chargoggagoggmanchaugg…
A wonderful NY Times story about Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg (yes the sign in the picture is misspelled), and its long name.

Civil Unions
It turns out that many of the states which banned same-sex marriage unwittingly also banned civil unions - even though most people in those states (even the ones against same-sex marriage) support civil unions!

Bagpipes
Talking about stress, one of the endlessly fascinating things about humans are all the creative ways we come up with to let off a bit of steam. Today I saw a businessman who plays the bagpipes in Bryant Park during his lunch break.
But somehow he didn’t seem too relaxed when I saw him walking home […]
Google Scholar

UPDATE: A librarian’s review of Google Scholar. (via LanguageHat)
Lumix
Even though I’m not yet done with my thesis (three weeks to go!) I decided to reward myself for passing my oral defense by purchasing a Panasonic Lumix FX7. This replaces my brick like Canon PowerShot S20. I wanted something much smaller, since I never want to take my Canon around with me. I also […]
Baboons
Robert Sapolsky has spent much of his life studying Baboon society. While Baboons are not human, they, along with other higher primates, share with humans the ability to be stressed out.
Like many of us, these primates don’t spend most of the day worrying about their next meal, and so like many of us, they are […]
Flip-Flop
Speaking in the House on July 27, 1848, Congressman Abraham Lincoln of Illinois tried to explain why he was first against the (Mexican-American) war, and then was for it:
But, as General Taylor is, par exellence, the hero of the Mexican War, and as you Democrats say we Whigs have always opposed the war, you think […]
