The Central Intelligence Agency, using a missile fired from an unmanned surveillance drone, tried on Monday to kill an Afghan factional leader who has vowed to topple the current government, Pentagon and administration officials said today.

American officials said Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, the leader of a militant and predominantly Pashtun party called Hezb-i-Islami, was the target of an American missile strike outside of Kabul. The officials said he survived the attack, which was carried out by a Predator drone carrying Hellfire antitank missiles.
