For a man with no official role in the new Afghanistan, Sayyaf commands attention. Once considered among the country’s most radical Islamic leaders, described as a friend of Osama bin Laden and the inspiration for a band of Asian terrorists, Sayyaf today is shut out of a government whose creation he opposed.
