A gas explosion that ripped through a coal mine in northeastern China killed at least 111 miners, state television reported today.

The state coal mine safety bureau in China — which has the world’s biggest mining industry but also one of the deadliest with 5,000 mining-related deaths last year — ordered an immediate halt to production in 10 mines under Jixi’s administration.

The government has tried to shut down thousands of small, illegal mines that do not meet safety standards, but they often reopen them with protection from local authorities.”
