““The arrival of more animals is the last thing that the Kabul Zoo needs right now as it continues to struggle to look after the few animals that remain there,” the London-based World Society for the Protection of Animals said in a recent statement. The Chinese animals, it added, are at “grave risk of suffering and possibly even death.”
Zoo officials acknowledge that conditions are poor, but they complained today that despite pledges of assistance from several governments and animal charities, little concrete aid has materialized. They said that one group is paying for animal feed and another has repaired the electrical system, but that they are in dire need of medicine and supplies.”
