The five women named to the policy-making Central Committee make up barely 2.5 percent of that influential body — an all-time low in the 53-year history of the People’s Republic of China.

The only good news for China’s feminists was the promotion of state councilor and former trade minister Wu Yi to the otherwise male-dominated, 24-member Politburo. She is the first woman to sit on that body in nearly two decades. She is also the first female Politburo member who is single; her predecessors were all wives of senior Chinese leaders.”
