The battle for Arab eyeballs is about to be joined by new TV stations hoping to challenge Al-Jazeera, which has been shut out of Jordan and Kuwait.
The main challenger is Al-Arabiya, a 24-hour news channel that promises to be more advertiser friendly than Al-Jazeera. In an interview, Al-Arabiya’s news director positions the station as a hybrid of CNN and the BBC, and predicts a better working relationship with government officials than Al-Jazeera has. The U.S. is also preparing to launch an Arabic language station in the Middle East.
