LanguageHat has a wonderful analysis of a recent poem by John Ashbery, and how it differs from the poet’s early work. What caught my eye were the following lines:

We mourned that meritocracy which, wildly vibrant,

had kept food on the table and milk in the glass.

Indeed. Not to be too literal, but I think anyone looking for an academic job right now can sympathize.
