Uzumaki

twitter threads, manga

One of the best things I read in 2021 was the Japanese horror manga Uzumaki うずまき (Spiral). It is really like nothing else I have ever read, because the horror comes from the graphics themselves. It is literally anything drawn using spirals that are attacking the villagers! Look at the foreshadowing in this image, the second pane of the manga. (This frame is in color, but the rest is in black and white, which works even better.) There was a film adaptation and a TV one scheduled for this year, but so much is dependent on Junji Ito’s drawings that I can’t imagine them having the same impact? It is like trying to adapt Chris Marker’s La Jetée - which was entirely based on the way still photos relate to time - a live action version just misses the point entirely.
