Major Attractions
Kunsthistorisches Museum
So many classic works of art that we’d previously only seen in reproductions. I suspect that much of John Berger’s Ways of Seeing was composed while perusing this collection.
Schönbrunn Palace
Worth it for the gardens alone, but we also really enjoyed the palace tour.
Belvedere
Klimt! We weren’t familiar with his landscape paintings, which we loved.
Egon Schiele’s work was also a revelation.
Albertina
Especially enjoyed an exhibit of works by Gregory Crewdson
Sigmund Freud Museum
Both his home and his office, and they’ve done a great job turning it into a museum. But the famous couch is in London.
Off the Beaten Path
Josephinum
Medical museums are always fun. This one is more scientific, a collection of anatomical pathology is located in the nearby Madhouse Tower, but we didn’t have time for that.
Third man museum
An impressive personal collection that spans almost an entire city block, both of material related to the film, as well as the history of Vienna after the war.
Third man canal tour
The stuff about the sewer system was nice, but seeing where the famous scenes from the film were shot was even better.
Waschsalon Nr. 2, Karl Marx Hof
You can’t really appreciate the scale of “Red Vienna” until you visit this place in person.
Beethoven Museum
He only lived here for a year, but it is a good museum. Walking distance from Karl Marx Hof.
